Gibson pens new United contract

Manchester United have agreed a contract extension with promising midfielder Darron Gibson to keep him at Old Trafford until 2012.

Gibson, 21, is highly regarded by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and enjoyed a breakthrough season last term when he made 14 appearances for the Red Devils.

He was a key part of their Carling Cup success and marked his potential on the final day of the season when he scored the only goal of the game against Hull City with a spectacular long-range strike.

"I am very happy to commit my future to United," he told United's official website.

"Last season I enjoyed every opportunity and when I got my chance I wanted to prove what I could do. I hope to continue that this season."

Gibson also became a regular with the Republic of Ireland last season and Ferguson said he expected the player to push for a first-team place at Old Trafford this season.

"Darron was one of the young players who emerged last season as a United first-team player," he said.

"His appearance ratio did not really reflect the high regard in which we hold him, as he has constantly worked hard to challenge for a first team spot."

"easy_e7 (Manchester United fan) - hey , you know just because he featured in those CC games doesn't mean he was brilliant - he was ok...nothing more ...ffs he's 21 and still miles beyond anderson or other 21 year old who can actually be branded as "talented" - he's an average player - can't pass , can't beat men, can't defend, can't tackle can't cross - when i say can't, i mean "can't" on united level...players here need to have at least one aspect of the game which is above average and so far he suggested that it could only be his shot. but then again, it can't be enough.who knows maybe i will be proved wrong but so far he's done very little to prove that he's better than the likes of chadwick, campbell, excersley etc...like i said - phil neville at best"

"Tbh i dont rate this guy.. i think he has a great shot on him and thats about it.. needs to be trained up big time if he is worth using in an important game"

Starsky (Manchester United fan)

"Its good to a see a young promising midfielder sign a long term contract. He has bags of potential and could be culd be moulded into a Flether and Carrick stype of player. He surely has a big future at Manchester United Fc for many years to come and will become stronger with more games under his belt. He has a wicked shot and can score some spectacular goals which is a bonus."

"it is good for him to stay longer in United but if he want to be in the starting line up there is a lot of improvement need to be done in his style of playing..train harder..."

cixelsydnam (Wolverhampton Wanderers fan)

"When he was at Wolves he was only 19. When a certain Cristiano Ronaldo was 19 everyone was complaining that he was just a twinkle toes with too many flicks. See how he matured and improved. Obviously Gibson isnt anywhere near this standard but it proves that young players can improve immensely over a couple of seasons. Give him a chance before you slate him"

"He got a great goal vs Hull on the last day of the season, a sign of more things to come. Michael Carrick Jnr. Fully deserves his new contract."
