Cannavaro: In squad
Fit-again captain Fabio Cannavaro and striker Luca Toni have been recalled by coach Marcello Lippi for Italy's opening World Cup qualifiers.
But Sampdoria striker Antonio Cassano and AC Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini - who were both part of Roberto Donadoni's Euro 2008 squad - have not received the nod.
The Italians face Cyprus away on Saturday and Georgia at home on 10th September as they begin their bid to retain their World Cup crown.
Real Madrid defender Cannavaro, a pivotal member of Lippi's 2006 World Cup-wining team, returns after missing the unsuccessful Euro 2008 campaign with damaged ankle ligaments.
Toni returns after missing the Italians' 2-2 draw with Austria in a friendly earlier this month with a calf muscle tear.
Fiorentina defender Alessandro Gamberini also returns from injury, while Gennaro Gattuso is in the squad despite missing Milan's 2-1 defeat to Bologna in Serie A on Sunday because of a shoulder knock he suffered against Austria.
Materazzi out
But centre-back Marco Materazzi has not been included after coming back from injury in Inter Milan's 1-1 draw at Sampdoria on Saturday.
While Milan's Daniele Bonera has been dropped as Cannavaro and Gamberini return, Juventus defender Nicola Legrottaglie has kept his place after being called in as a late replacement for his injured club mate Giorgio Chiellini before the Austria friendly.
Roma midfielder Simone Perrotta is unavailable because of an Achilles tendon problem.
The qualifiers mark Lippi's return to competitive action on the Azzurri bench after being recalled to replace Donadoni after the Italian's Euro 2008 exit.
The Azzurri also face Ireland, Bulgaria and Montenegro in European Qualifying Group Eight.
