No relation to namesake Marius, Daniel Niculae will be a handy option to have on the bench for Romania coach Victor Piturca.
Niculae made his name in Romanian football with Rapid Bucharest and he impressed during the club's run to the quarter-finals of the 2005/06 Uefa Cup.
That summer he left the domestic league to join Auxerre and again showed his quality in Europe by scoring in three of the four Uefa Cup group matches, including one in a 2-2 draw with Rangers.
Though he managed just four league goals in his debut season with Auxerre, this term he notched 11 times in 35 Ligue 1 appearances.
Niculae had a mixed qualifying campaign for Euro 2008, scoring twice in a 6-1 win over Albania, but also being sent off in the 2-1 victory in Slovenia.
He scored as a substitute in the March friendly win over Russia and has the ability to pinch a goal from the bench at Euro 2008.
