Talented full-back with an eye for going forward, Razvan Rat is expected to start on the left side for Romania at Euro 2008.
Rat has been making steady progress through his career and has been a stalwart of the Shakhtar Donetsk side in recent seasons.
He started his career at Rapid Bucharest, and won two Romanian titles with the club, before joining Shakhtar in 2003.
Two Ukrainian title winners' medals have been added to Rat's collection and his performances in Eastern Europe have seen him linked with a move to the Premier League.
Sunderland scouted the left-back earlier in the season before manager Roy Keane opted against making a January bid.
Rat played in all six of Shakhtar's UEFA Champions League group games this season and created Cristiano Lucarelli's goal in the home win over Celtic.
In Euro 2008 qualifying, Rat started every match bar the 3-0 home victory over Luxembourg and he is certain to be a key figure in the tournament itself.
