The bright young thing of Austrian football, Harnik was born in Germany but qualifies for Josef Hickersberger's squad by virtue of a father from Graz.
Schooled at minnows SC Vier - und Marschlande, the youngster moved to big guns Werder Bremen in 2006 and was rewarded with his first pro contract until 2010 there upon breaking into the first team last year.
Yet things have not gone completely to plan in his fledgling career, with a broken foot keeping him sidelined for the tail end of the 2006/07 season.
But with his return to fitness came promotion to the Werder senior squad, and international recognition was not far behind, once he had opted to play for Austria - where he has never lived - rather than Germany.
Appearances for the Under-19 and Under-21 side preceded his first call-up to the full international squad and he responded to the step up with a goalscoring debut as a substitute against the Czech Republic in August 2007.
A precocious talent, the pacy Harnik is a trained insurance clerk, not that he is likely to need to use that talent for many a year.
