When asked to choose his motto as part of his profile on Bayern Munich's official site, Jansen opted for: "You'll always be offered sympathy, but envy has to be earned."
And there were more than a few envious glances cast in Bayern's direction last summer when the 22-year-old made a 9million euro move from Borussia Monchengladbach, where he had been since the age of nine.
Arsenal, Barcelona and Real Madrid had also been linked with the youngster, who had been a rare shining light as Gladbach slipped out of the Bundesliga.
Primarily a left-back but also proficient in midfield and up front, Jansen made his international debut in September 2005 and was included in Germany's 2006 World Cup squad, though he would make only one appearance.
Qualifying for this campaign has represented his coming-of-age, with eight appearances to his name and a goal in the 6-0 win over San Marino.
Jansen is regarded as a tough-tackling but talented ball-player, and at 6ft 3in represents an aerial threat both at set-pieces and crosses.
