A relatively new arrival in the squad having only made his international debut in October 2006, Fritz is one of Germany's lower-profile players.
A former Under-18 and Under-21 international, the 27-year-old made his debut in a 4-1 victory over Slovakia just months after Germany had finished third in the World Cup and impressed suitably to remain in the squad.
Very much in the mould of a modern-day full-back in that he is just as accomplished going forward as he is defensively Fritz's big break came in 2003 when he was signed by Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen, though he was immediately loaned back to previous employers Karlsruhe.
The following year he was incorporated into the Leverkusen first-team squad and helped them qualify for the Champions League, only to be agonisingly denied his chance to play when he broke his leg during a pre-season friendly.
A move to Werder Bremen followed in the summer of 2006 and with it came international recognition, a chance he has grabbed with both hands.
