Brazilian born to a German-Hungarian father and a Panamanian mother, Kuranyi gets a second chance at a major tournament after a loss of form in the lead-up to the 2006 World Cup saw him omitted by Jurgen Klinsmann.
Having made his Bundesliga debut in 2001, the rangy frontman quickly established himself as one of Europe's hottest young properties with 15 goals in 32 starts in his first season at Stuttgart.
And after electing to play for Germany, where he has lived since the age of 14, he was rewarded with his international debut against Lithuania in March 2003, taking just three games to get off the mark for his country.
A place in the national squad for Euro 2004, where he would start all three of Germany's games, followed but his form dipped thereafter and Klinsmann gave him the cold shoulder when he named his World Cup squad.
Kuranyi responded in style by top scoring for Schalke, who he had joined in the summer of 2005, and a 15-month sabbatical from international football ended when he was recalled in February last year.
Six appearances in qualifying yielded three goals with Kuranyi again looking the explosive performer he had when he broke through, and his 15 Bundesliga goals this term was only bettered by Luca Toni and Mario Gomez.
