Borowski was once identified by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as a potential successor to Michael Ballack, but injuries have dealt him a cruel hand.
Since making his international debut in 2002 the 28-year-old has only just shaded over the 30-cap mark, far too small an amount for a man of his talent.
A one-club man having started his pro career with Werder Bremen in 2001, Borowski was an integral part of the Germany squad that finished third in the World Cup but appeared just three times (starting once) in qualifying this time.
That was mainly the result of a string of frustrating injuries that saw him manage the full 90 minutes in a Bundesliga match just 11 times between the summer of 2006 and January this year.
Yet despite his frailty, Bayern Munich have given him the chance to prove he can (belatedly) fill the boots of Ballack by signing him for next season.
Accomplished on the ball and blessed with great vision, the midfielder is also strong in the tackle and is known for his powerful shot; all in all just about the perfect combination of talents a modern-day central midfielder needs.
