Regarded as something of a surprise selection given Timo Hildebrand - who was left out of the squad - had played twice in qualifying, Adler was selected with one eye on the future.
At 23, the Bayer Leverkusen man is five years Hildebrand's junior and Joachim Low explained his decision by saying: "I decided that for this tournament I wanted a player who had better perspectives for after it too."
And Adler's selection isn't a total shock to those in the know (though most would have expected Robert Enke, 30, to miss out) as he has been in fantastic form for Bayer Leverkusen this season.
Linked with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea while in his teens, the boyhood Manchester United fan only made his Bundesliga debut for Leverkusen last February but was so impressive he has been their No 1 ever since.
An agile goalkeeper with maturity that belies his youth, Adler described his rise to the first team as going "from zero to hero - I was out injured for ages and then suddenly I'm the number one. It was a crazy six months".
You wonder how he would describe the last six.
