Had things turned out differently it could well have been Enke and not Jens Lehmann playing here as an Arsenal and Germany goalkeeper.
As it is, nothing ever came of the Gunners being heavily with the then-Benfica custodian in 2001, and two years later Arsene Wenger signed Lehmann.
And the intervening years have been filled with frustration for Enke, whose dream move to Barcelona on a three-year contract yielded only one league appearance, while a loan move to Fenerbahce lasted just a fortnight.
The former Carl Zeiss Jena and Borussia Monchengladbach custodian has since settled at Hannover, taking the captaincy at the start of this season.
But his international career is yet to take off, with his sole apperance by the time the squad for this tournament was named coming in a 1-0 friendly defeat by Denmark in Duisburg in March last year.
Three times he appeared in the German matchday squad during qualifying, but failed to get of the bench with Lehmann and Timo Hildebrand sharing the 12 appearances between them.
Hildebrand's somewhat surprising omission appears to mean Enke will be Lehmann's understudy here, with Rene Adler likely to be the third choice.
