Gomez's form this season presents Joachim Low with perhaps his biggest dilemma as he plots Germany's European Championship campaign.
For while Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski were certain starters at the beginning of the qualifying programme, Gomez has made such a strong case for selection he has started three of Germany's last four competitive games.
Nineteen goals for Stuttgart in the Bundesliga this season was a tally bettered only by Luca Toni, while he netted twice in 31 minutes in the qualifier against San Marino and also bagged a brace in the friendly against Switzerland.
That has forced the 22-year-old into Low's starting line-up, though thus far it has not been at the expense of Klose or Podolski, with all three starting.
The son of a Spanish father and German mother, Gomez burst to national attention last season as he inspired Stuttgart's title success and was named Footballer of the Year in Germany.
That saw him linked with some of Europe's premier clubs and for a striker boasting pace, aerial prowess, strength and an unerring eye for goal, a strong Euro 2008 could well see plenty more knocking at his door.
