The AC Milan veteran is perhaps not one for the purists, but his effectiveness cannot be called into question.
His hard work and battling qualities have made him a key player for club and country in recent years, following a career in which he has struggled to establish himself and it is only in recent years he has really made his mark.
He forced his way into the Milan starting XI at the beginning of the 2006-07 season and he was a key figure as the Rossoneri defeated Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Liverpool on their way to winning the Champions League.
Milan coach Carlo Ancelottt rates the midfielder so highly that he has made him captain this season in the absence of the injured Paolo Maldini.
He was recalled to the Italy squad by coach Roberto Donadoni following an absence of almost two years, and having played all five games in qualifying since then, he looks almost certain to line up in midfield for the clash with Holland.
