Juventus goalkeeper Buffon has firmly established himself as one of the best, if not THE best, goalkeeper in the world and was again a key player as Italy conceded just nine goals in twelve qualifying matches.
The most expensive number one in the world, costing Juve £32million when they signed him from Parma in 2001, Buffon starred in the Italy team which won the World Cup in 2006 with a penalty shoot-out win over France.
Indeed, he kept five clean sheets in the tournament, only being beaten by a Cristian Zaccardo own goal and a Zinedine Zidane penalty.
But his memories of the European Championships are not so good.
Buffon broke his hand in a friendly match against Norway just eight days before Euro 2000 and was forced to miss out, while he played all three games as Italy failed to make it past the group stages of the competition in Portugal in 2004.
Standing at 6'3 tall, Buffon is an imposing figure for forwards and has won trophies throughout his career - to add to his 81 caps, he has collected two Serie A titles (two others were revoked after Juve were found guilty of match-fixing), the Coppa Italia, the UEFA Cup, three Super Cups and, of course, the World Cup.
