The 27-year-old Gamberini only made his debut for the national team last October in a friendly match against South Africa, but is called up to the Euro 2008 squad in place of the injured Fabio Cannavaro.
The central defender was not included in Roberto Donadoni's original squad, but ankle injury suffered by skipper Cannavaro, means the Fiorentina man makes the journey to Austria and Switzerland.
Gamberini started his career at Bologna and spent six years there, before moving to Florence in 2005 where he has flourished under the tutelage of Cesare Prandelli.
Although it is unlikely he will play from the start for Italy, Gamberini could well be a part of Donadoni's post-Euro 2008 thoughts, given that a number of his rivals for the position are into their 30's.
