The giant central defender who unlikely to feature in Marco van Basten's starting line-up but does provide an experienced and highly valuable back-up to his defence.
Boulahrouz had a tough up-bringing and failed to settle at youth level at clubs like Ajax and Haarlem before he finally made a breakthrough at RKC Waalwijk.
Martin Jol got the best out of him and he starred for RKC which earned him a move to Hamburg in 2004 - and just months after his switch to Germany he was handed his international debut by Marco van Basten.
He soon became a firm-fixture in Holland's defence as his reputation continued to grow and in 2006 following the World Cup in Germany he was bought by Chelsea for £8.5million.
Boulahrouz' ability to play in central defence and in both full-back positions was seen a invaluable by Jose Mourinho and he made a promising start to his career at Stamford Bridge.
However, he gradually dropped out-of-favour and in the summer of 2007 it was clear he a surplus to requirements and a number of Premier League clubs showed an interest but Spanish outfit Sevilla sealed a loan deal.
Since moving to Chelsea and subsequently Sevilla, Boulahrouz has dropped down the pecking order with Holland also although he did feature in four qualifying games.
Boulahrouz was a last-minute inclusion in the squad after Ryan Babel pulled out through injury.
